Hi,

I am going to being installing my old hard disk, which has Windows XP onto a
new motherboard w/ CPU. As you know, extreme changes in hardware
configuration for an Windows 2000 or XP computer, will result in a "Stop"
error.

Is there anyway to avoid the "Stop" error?

thanks

Peter

I don't know about the stop error, but I put in a new motherboard and
eventually began to clean install to an alternately booting partition, which
runs way better than the brought-over XP. I never got a stop error, but it
was just a step from a kt133 to a kt400. I kept the old XP just for
reference while I'm still setting up the new one.

I personally never had that problem. I tried installing a new Mobo
twice with the same HD, and (perhaps since I always went from one VIA
board to another) never had a serious problem.

Nope. You can do a repair installation over the top though.

You'll need to do a Repair Install of XP at minimum, but be prepared to do a
clean install. I've attempted a Repair Install twice with a change of
motherboard and it failed totally in both cases. One of those changes was to an
upgraded version of the same motherboard (from Intel 845G to 845GE chipset).
With a failure involving two boards so similar from the same manufacturer and
with the same model number except for "version 2" tacked onto the end, I frankly
don't have a lot of faith in Repair Install to alter XP for new motherboards.
