I am considering buying a pda so I can collect my work email immediately
whilst on the move. I know very little about computers and my work is closed
for half term (school). Can anyone let me know if merely buying a pda (with
relevant applicable software) is sufficient to allow me to have my emails
automatically pushed through to it, or does this involve my work having to
purchase additional technology too?

Thanks for your help, Karon

That depends entirely on the email server and type of account. The only
email server that I know uses push is Exchange Server and, yes, if that's
what your employer is using AND its setup appropriately AND he decides to
offer this service, everything you need is in usually in the box with the
PDA. Note that most PDAs are capable of doing their own scheduled "pulling"
from Exchange, POP3 and IMAP services. I might also add that I have a WM5
PocketPC phone and we have Exchange 2003 Server here; I've tried the
Exchange direct push service and, while it works beautifully, it
dramatically shortens battery life on the PDA. I now do an ActiveSync
send/receive every half hour which keeps me informed and gives me enough
battery life to make it through the day. FWIW and YMMV...
