I have been having trouble in winXP pro with a cd rom drive not refreshing
its contents correctly. I found a KB article about it: KB 314939. This
article is absolutely no help as all suggestions have been implemented and
the problem continues to exist. It is particularly troublesome when I am
installing a new program that has more than one install disk. The computer
continues to read the contents from the first cd with the second cd in
place. Refreshing the drive doesn't work.

I then tried to see what my options were to place a phone call. I was
dumbfounded to find that phone support was $245 per incident...that is if I
read the options correctly. The software doesn't cost that much. Is
Microsoft bound and determined to drive everyone to Linux eventually??

Does anyone know how to tweak the registry or something to solve this
problem???

Thanks

Ray,

I don't have a resolution for your problem, but I thought I'd try to clear
up the price confusion for you.

The $245 price is for what's called Professional Support. Which is typically
in a large office environment where the XP Pro computers are connecting to a
Domain Server. The normal consumer support is around $35 per incident.
Assuming that you are using XP Prof on your home computer you would want the
$35 option. Keep in mind that when you purchase a Retail version of XP you
have 2 free incidents and an unlimited number of setup incidents. If you
have an OEM version of XP, which would have been installed on your computer
when you purchased it, then you should contact the support line for the
manufacturer of the computer.

I am having exactly the same problem with my PC. I called
up Microsoft and they told me to update my BIOS on a brand
new 3.0GHz PC. They also suggested I pay $50 for technical
support...

At the moment I have found a workaround to the problem - I
go to Computer Management and remap the CD Drive letter,
ie. remove the mapping and then reinstate it. I have to do
this for every CD though. This is better than rebooting
but... Microsoft could do better.

I'm wondering if you have found a fix for your problem??

Thanks
