I currently have a retail version of XP home. My daughter
is going to attend college and I want to upgrade her
computer from windows 98 to XP. I want to take advantage
of the student discounts available for new XP pro OS. This
is my question: "How can I purchase the XP pro student
software, install it on my computer (currently with XP
home), then install my copy of XP home on her computer and
still be within the MS guidelines?" I have purchased both
copies legally, yet I would like to have the pro version on
my computer.

Any help?

Thank you

The Windows XP Academic Version licensing agreement (EULA)
only permits installation and use on the computer used by a qualified
student or educator. If you are neither, you are not permitted to use it on
your computer.

jeff,

your option would be to look for an upgrade of xp pro or get the academic
version of xp pro (you may need to ask your retailer if they have one and
what are the requirements).

when you install xp home on your daughter's computer, the most you would be
doing is to call microsoft, explain why you are transfering the software to
another computer and have it activated, if it won't allow you to activate xp
over the net it's for free i think.

and since the xp pro has not been activated yet, i don't think you would
have any problem with this.

i hope this helps.

dennis

You can't. First of all, although she qualifies for the academic
version, you don't. Second, you can't put one copy on two
computers.

Besides. As your daughter will be in college. She will probably need
to join a Domain. For which she will need Pro, not Home.
