Publishing to a Website from FrontPage

This was a query I made under another thread
Hi to all in this thread, in particular to fellow Aussie
Andrew. I used to be a iinet member until I switched to
TransACT (in Canberra)

I have a 1GByte Website (http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/)
supplied by TransACT.

I have a similar question.

To date, I have coded HTML with a bit of help from PC
magazines and the W3C learning site
(http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp), and I have used
freeware FTP programs to upload it. At the moment, I am
using SMARTFTP and it is quite good.

However, I would like to be able to use FrontPage as a
coding aid (well, it does it all doesn't it?) and then
upload from there.

When I try to "Open Web..", I get quite confused. If I
type in my Host ftp address http://ftp.homemail.com.au/)
or my website address (http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/)
I am told it is not accessible - I may need a password.

This is quite true - I supplied a password to SMARTFTP.
How do I do the same to FrontPage? The FrontPage help
gets quite techical, talking about subwebs and RootWebs
and I get lost.

Can anyone gently lead me through this maze, please

It would be better to start your own thread.

You cannot open a server based website using an FTP
address. The site must be on a server with FrontPage
extensions installed, and opened using an address in the
form http://example.com

I don't know what sort of Website I am trying to access.
All I know is its address "ftp.homemail.com.au/" and my
Login name and password, which I use when loading via
SmartFTP. After loading, I (or anyone) can then access it
using the address "http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/"

Which if these is a server based website or an FTP
address? And what is the difference?

I don't know how to check whether this is a server with
FrontPage extensions installed, apart from ringing them
in the new week.

I tried to Open Web from FrontPage with the
address "http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/" but I got an
error message re password needed, (but it could also mean
the address doesn't exist). This is in the
form "http://example.com", isn't it?

I found something in FP about registering to my ISP, but
I couldn't follow it

Can anyone help as to exactly what steps to follow in
FronPage to publish to my website. If I can't do this, I
will have to stick with SmartFTP or some other freeware.

Your web does not have FP extensions installed..so either you have them installed - some hosts charge a little more...best to check....or you continue to use FTP.

Hi all,

Please ignore my previous post.

I found out how to connect. I had to specify ftp://ftp.homemail.com.au and
then I was asked for Username and Password

Hooray , it worked !!

You can develop a "web" as Frontpage calls it on your local system - you don't
*have* to put in an http: address - it can be a folder on your hard disk, then
when you're done, publish the site to a server using Frontpage extensions and you
can publish with the Frontpage publish feature, otherwise upload with an FTP
program (or the ftp function in Frontpage).

However, if you're trying to open a site remotely, that server needs the
frontpage server extensions enabled.

and hello back again.....nice to see some fellow aussies on this group.

however, using FTP will not allow you to use the Frontpage extension
functionality.

Thanks, Andrew

Can anyone tell me what affect the use of FP extensions has. I think I may
have used some since I sent my first post.

I have been developing my website on my local disk in FP and I have uploaded
to my website using FTP in FP.

When I look at my website in IE, everything looks as it was on my "local
web" (as I think FP terms it.) Does this mean that my Server has FP
extensions, or is it something on my computer that enables it to work
correctly? And how do I know?
Obviously, I am just a beginner :) These things may be clear to experienced
Web users.

you don't have fp extensions on the site that you posted..so you have to use FTP.
