Publishing printers in Active Directory

For a while now I've had a problem with this and not been
able to find a good solution.
I had the message on the printer sharing dialog box that
stated "The directory operation is still in progress". A
search of Technet pointed to a DNS setup error. After
following the suggested setup the problem remained.
After clutching at a lot of straws the final thing I tried
was to add the print server to the
domain/Builtin/Administrators group. It worked but I'm a
little curious as to whether this is the correct approach.

Should the server have been in this group anyway?
If so, then why wasn't it? Should it need to be added
manually as I did?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you browse the entire network from this machine, you should see an
option to browse the "Directory". When you expand and browse the
"directory", does it come up instantly, or do you get lag?

The printers do not list in the directory at all. I had
one trying for about 3 weeks but never got published

OK, but you didn't answer the question...

Sorry , misunderstood. No there's no lag. The thing is now
fixed by putting the Print server (member) in the
administrators group. It isn't a network error as
everything else (DNS,ADS etc.) works fine. It seems that
the machine must have admin rights to enter stuff in the
directory.

OK, who were you logged in as when you tried to publish the printer? Are
you saying you can browse the whole directory from this member server
with no lag, e.g. you can browse the domain controllers, users, computer
accounts, child domains and so on? If not, what CAN you browse? How did
you browse it, what did you click on?

Not sure what you mean. How can you put a server into an administrators
group? Where do you see this "administrators" group?

You'd think so, but as I recently posted on the AD group, there seems to
be a security lapse when it comes to publishing printers in AD - you can
publish them when you should not be able to.
