I am new to FP 2002. What is the best way to optimize graphics for display
on the web: Minimum file size with maximum clarity.

Would be nice to have a program that has a slider that lets you adjust the
file size while displaying the changing picture quality. Is there anything
like that?

I am using the Irfan graphics program but it allows only jpg saves for low -
medium - high quality and that is rather primitive. Neither can I spend time
and hundreds of dollars on a really advanced graphics program. Something
simple, please??

the best way I've found to do it is this:
import your graphics into FrontPage after you run them through an optimizer
program. one of the best I've found is smartsaver pro from www.ulead.com
it's really a powerful program that does more than just optimize but that's
it's strongest suit. It's got a fairly good slicer with rollover script
writing too. the coolest thing it'll do is let you select different areas
of a graphic for different levels of compression. If you've got a picture
of someone's face with this you can compress the area of the face to 70% and
crush the rest of the picture at like 50%.

PS they've got a free download so you can try it out.

It's great for web graphics, but PSPv.8 is superior for photos IMO. The new
scripting feature is worth the price many times over in time saved.

Everyone has their opinions on which software best suits their needs. Mine
hasn't changed that PhotoImpact is superior in every way to
PaintShop..especially with photos. I used PaintShop off and on for
years..but can no longer find any advantages to it.

Disclaimer! This link is on the Ulead site..but marketing aside..I find the
differences portrayed to be representative:

I was specifically mentioning SmartSaver Pro. that is a fantastic program.
I could see migrating to working in Photoshop from photoimpact because it's
superior but for hard-core image manipulation/ optimization and batch
conversion etc. I don't think anything beats smart saver. it's around $50,
but the demo lasts long enough that Walter E. could get his site done.
