What is the advantage of publish a shared folder on Active Directory instead of just share it and map a drive letter?

It allows users to search for a share rather than requiring them to know the
exact path.

But if map a network drive letter, won't it be the same?

It will be the same to the end user but in order to map a drive letter the
user has to know the UNC path to the share beforehand (or you have to tell
them). Publishing a shared folder allows users to find a share without
knowing the UNC path. There is no functional difference between the two
methods.
