I am trying to convert our church services to be able to put them on our
website. I was able to convert the file from the dvd of the service recording
to a .wmv file so that I could import it into Movie Maker. The original video
(1.06 GB) played perfectly in my Windows Media Player after being converted.
I was able to import it & edit it in my storyboard and everthing played
perfectly on the storyboard. I then published the movie and when I try to
play it back it freezes about 4 minutes in then goes to black and no audio.

I have tried unchecking the filters. That did not work. I also tried
publishing it to my computer with several different options, DV-AVI(NTSC)(133
MB), Windows Media DVD Quality (3.0 Mbps)(175 MB), even Windows Media Low
Bandwidth (117 kbps)(74 MB)(with horrible quality) but all with the same
results at 4 minutes.

My pc is optimized & I am running:

Suggestions would be appreciated as I would like to use what I have and not
have to purchase expensive editing software as I have heard good & bad about
all of them. Thank you in advance.

Buying software that naturally edits mpeg files would make life easier, it's
not expensive and the good points massively outweight any bad points you may
have heard.
Move maker in vista should work with mpeg files, so have you tried?
Otherwise, if they don't it sounds like your conversion probably failed at
some point and the file is corrupted. Now, corrupted files will often
playback ok, but won't edit.
What did you use to convert?
I'd suggest using wme
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/ConvertMpeg2wmv.html
or squared5's streamclip
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages/UsefulProgrammes.htm

Well, my original files were in VTS...VOB files and I used Format Factory to
convert it to .wmv file so it would be recognized by movie maker. It seemed
to convert it just fine, and it edited just fine in Movie Maker. Played back
perfectly with all transitions & effects, but when I published it that is
when it messed up. I'll try to find another program to convert it & see if
that helps. I just don't have alot of funds to work with to buy alot of
software as I volunteer my time and my own sources to host my churches
website.

==============================================
Try converting the file to .wmv or .avi using the
following free converter:

SUPER © Simplified
Universal Player Encoder & Renderer
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
(the mirror download site is faster)

(FWIW...it's always a good practice to create a
System Restore point before installing new software)

After installing SUPER...open the program and
drag/drop your .VOB file into the Active field.

Output Container...choose...wmv.

Left click the Encode button.

Choose: Simple Profile / OK...

Wait...

(FWIW..I have better luck with video if I do not
try to multi-task while a file is being converted)

When the file is converted...you should find it in...
Program Files / eRightSoft / Super / OutPut.

Or...you can type...Ctrl+T...to open the Save
Window and choose a save folder.

Good luck...

Ok, I am about ready to chunk this program as far as I can. I have tried
every suggested fix in this entire forum and the program only gets worse.

I tried the SUPER converter that was suggested. Wow the quality it converted
too was aweful, you could barely see it. And that was supposed to be the best
quality that was selected.

I downloaded the Windows Encoder & the Hotfix for Vista. That seemed to work
& converted with a workable copy, not the best , but decent. But when I open
the files into Movie Maker & put them in the storyboard they will start to
play, but then if I use the slide button or click on the different frames it
freezes. And if I try to publish it freezes.

On top of that Movie Maker won't open all the time. Even when I have to use
the RUN & type it in directly, it still won't open. I got it to open once by
going into my task manager & browsing to the ,exe file & it opened, but then
it froze again and now won't restart at all. I have tried restarting my pc
and it doesn't work.

Boy they need to do alot more work on this program so that it will actually
work. Any suggestions on another program that I can edit and convert to a
file so I can post my video online?

Any and all video editing software can
be especially problematic if your system
is not in tip top condition.

There is a special version of Movie Maker
for systems that cannot handle version 6...
you may want to give it a try:

Windows Movie Maker 2.6 for Vista
For Vista users who cannot run the
Vista version of Movie Maker
http://tinyurl.com/2jqfac
or...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...328e-4df7-8f9d-068fc0f80cfc&displaylang=en&tm

IMHO...it sounds like you have system issues
that need to be diagnosed onsite. If you have
a friend who is a computer geek...now might
be a good time to give them a call.

Where is your file saved?
Your K: disc is a fat 32 disc, which means it has limits to how large files
can be.
Try saving to one of the other discs if you use that one.

As you are having trouble actually opening MM it does sound like you have a
problem with the pc, so as John has said getting an IT guy to check it out
and make sure it is all ok would be the next step.

Otherwise, what is your graphics card, make and model number?
Have you got the latest drivers for it?
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/GraphicsDrivers.html
A lot of people use MS update or their pc manufacturers, but you have to go
to the manufacturer of the card.
Ensure directX is fully updated, there have been a few updates recently.

Does this happen with every file you use?
I'm wondering if the file you are currently using is actually corrupt on the
dvd, so no matter what you do to it converting wise it will convert corrupt
and cause problems.

Streamclip have a great free app called squared 5 which will fix most small
errors with things like header data etc and will also convert from mpeg to
dv.avi, so maybe try that and tell it to fix errors.
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages/UsefulProgrammes.htm

Lastly good cheap editors are
Adobe premiere elements
Ulead video studio
Pinnacle studio

All of these should edit mpegs natively.
All will fail with corrupted files.
All will struggle if your pc isn't working properly.

Lastly, there is this new free editor, no idea whatit is like, as it is so
new, but if you want free it comes from a very large company, AVID, they
also make pinnacle studio, so might be worth a try. Here's a link to a
report about it.
http://www.simplydv.co.uk/index.php

The others have a free trial dpownload so you can see which you like, but be
aware having too many editing programmes on your pc can cause problems as
they interact with each other.

I've checked out my pc, everything seems to be good. If I knew a local IT guy
that would b a dream come true! But unfortunatly I don't so I pick the brains
of those online ;) My dad is an IT geek totally but he's in NY & I'm in TX.
I use my E drive, my K drive is used only for back-ups of my pc, its an
external HD.
My video card is an NVIDEA GeForce 7350 LE version 7.15.11.6230 and it is
updated.
Where is the directX in my pc, I can't seem to find it. Maybe that's part of
my problem. I thought I've seen it in here before, but I'm having trouble
locating it now. Where do I need to look for it?

The DVD I'm trying to use was burned by the lady at our church on her home
video camera. It could be that the original is corrupt. It is in VTS.VOB
files and it is broke into 5 different files. When I've tried to convert it
to .wmv format & have them joined together it seems to corrupt it. So I tried
converting each ov the .VOB files individually with Media Encoder to .wmv and
it seemed to convert fine & I could open the files in MM, but when I tried to
do anything with it MM freezes. It seems I was able to open 1 of the clips &
publish it thru MM ok, but when I tried to open several MM quits working. I
need to be able to join the 5 clips together, edit them & publish it as one
file to be able to upload to our website. I tried to use MM 2.6, but it
didn't seem to want to function either & you can only open one clip at a time
which is no good if I can't get a converter to convert all 5 clips into 1
without corrupting it.

I tried Squared 5 but I have to uninstall my Quicktime & find the
alternative to get the MPEG2 or pay the 19.99 for the plug-in for Quick-time.
I'm going to try that.

I checked the direct X and ran the tool & it reports no problems and I have
DirectX10

I tried to use the Squared 5 and it will open my files but it won't save or
convert, it tells me I don't have administrative privilage. I pulled up the
properties and it is not letting me run as administrator and I can't seem to
be able to get it to change.

Does it have the latest update though?
I'm suspecting this isn't the problem, but you may as well get it updated
now.

Ok, I have a finished product! Finally! But I still think it all biols down
to a bug in the MM still. Here's why. I was finally able to open MM and when
I was adding my clips & trying to publish I was using the links on the Left
sidebar. Well, MM kept freezing & acting all weird. So finally I decided to
use the toolbar accross the top. I selected FILE > Import Media > Selected
the Video_TS folder where the copy of the original DVD was then selected ALL
FILES > that should the .VOB files. I then inported each of the 5 files into
MM. Dragged them to the story board, played each clip and did my editing.
Unfortunatly the transitions don't appear to work well with the .vob format
as it gave irradict results on the frame following the transitions when
trying to play the storyboard. But the Effects worked great as did the Titles
& credits. AS long as I used my right click and the toolbar across the top.
If I used the sidebar menu I would get erratic results. I was able to save my
work and publish to a very good quality .wmv format. Which is all I needed it
to do.

Each time I had used the "Publish" link on the left sidebar it would freeze
MM. It created an error report each time which I sent to Microsoft, so
hopefully they will have a fix for this soon. But for now I can do some basic
editing and nice fade effects until microsoft releases a fix for whatever is
causing this issue or I can save enough for another editor.

Thank you to those that responded with lots of good advice & knowledge as we
tried to figure this out this past week.

: - )

I'm glad you are working through this.
I don't think it is an MM issue, or we would ahve seen it come up more than
just your once.
It could be a conflict issue with MM and another or several other programmes
you ahve installed.
It could be corruption in your installation of MM/Vista

It is most likley the file that is produced by your friend is not totally
compatible with MM and this causes the odd behaviour.

The problem with transitions and mpegs is that mpegs are made up of groups
of (pictures) frames, known as GOP's, and this group can be anything from 1
frame to 15, 20 or more, so if you try to instigate a transition over a very
long gop for a short period of time it will act strange.
