Published movies will not play in powerpoint

I'm using movie maker 6.0 and I'm able to edit and publish a movie. When I
play the movie in powerpoint 2003 it hangs up. I've tried a dozen different
video clips, each video downloaded from you-tube plays fine in powerpoint
before editing and publishing them. The stopping point differs in each
video, they don't stop at the same point in time.

Sometimes in movie maker I have the same problem when I try to play a video
that has been edited, the video will freeze and the sound may continue.

I've already downloaded the essentials codec pack.

Help please with any suggestions.

Sounds like your clips are not fully compatible
with Movie Maker. Have you tried converting
to.wmv before you import them?

Maybe Windows Media Encoder would be useful:

Windows Media Encoder

or...

How do I convert other video file formats to WMV?

Also...if you are adding .mp3 music files...
convert them to .wma:

How to convert .mp3 to .wma
using Windows Media Encoder

Open Windows Media Encoder

On the New Session screen / Wizards tab...
choose...Convert a file / OK

On the File Selection screen...browse to the
..mp3 Source File you wish to convert

Also browse to and select a save folder and
enter a name for your converted file /
Save button / Next

On the Content Distribution screen I usually
choose 'File Archive' / Next / Finish.

When you see the 'Encoding Results' screen
the task is complete.

I'm not adding any audio - They play fine in my powerpoint presentation
before editing them - After editing them they will not play in powerpoint -
or Movie Maker - or Movie Media

I double checked and my files show up as .wmv under properties

OK...now I'm double checking...

Are your original source files ('before' importing into Movie Maker) .wmv
files?
Are the file names...xxx.wmv? Or do they have a different extension?

My original file which I am successfully using in a Powerpoint presentation
has the extension of .wmv. I'm only trying to clip the front and end of the
file and then I'm publishing. When it's published it is also a .wmv file but
it will not play successfuly in Powerpoint - Movie Maker or Movie Media

OK...as an experiment...try running the completed
Movie Maker .wmv file through Windows Media Encoder.
Then try importing into PowerPoint.

i downloaded the encoder program and tried 2 differrent videos - they both
come up as a .wmv file but when I try to convert them again to a .wmv I get
an error window with the message that it was and Invalid or Corrupt file with
the code 0XC00D00F This video works fine in powerpoint except when
I try to edit it.

Apparently your original .wmv files have some corruption.

Did you try converting one of the original .wmv files before
importing it into Movie Maker?

I tried to convert 2 different videos that are both labeled .wmv files and
both already play well in Powerpoint. but both of them got the error notice
when I tried to convert them. Since they are both already .wmv files would
that have any bearing on them getting an error notice when trying to convert
them to a .wmv?

I also tried to convert one of the files that I edited in movie maker but
freezes in powerpoint, that one also froze in the conversion process.

Very frustrating!!

I just thought of one other thing that may shed some light? I just replaced
this computer, it has Vista, my last computer had XP. Using Movie Maker in
XP when I edited a video I could never save the video at all and i tried
everything suggested to me by other people on this site, including codecs
etc, but nothing changed. At least with Vista Movie Maker it saves when
it's published, but as I said it always freezes when played.

I think your original .wmv files are corrupted.

Does it make sense that the original files play fine in all applications if
they're corrupted?

When I originally downloaded these files from youtube I knew nothing at all
about videos, as I remember I think I just placed them in the powerpoint
presentation; I could be wrong since it was months ago. Obviously, I know
very little more now about videos than before. I'm going to see if they're
still available on youtube; I'd appreciate it if you would provide me with
the correct proceedure of downloading a video from youtube, if I need to
convert them or whatever when I download, so that I can edit them in Movie
Maker.

(I tried a different program last night by Prism, and it worked, but it
turns out that Prism doesn't really save the video, it only saves the file
name and you can't ever change, rename or do anything to the original source
file for the edited file to continue to work.)

Actually I just went back to youtube and I remembered how I originally
downloaded the videos. I used Videoget and the output is set for .wmv. So
I really confused of they could be corrupt, but I going to try downloading
another video as an .wmv and try to edit it in Movie Maker and see if it
works or if I have the same problem.

The files may have been corrupt when they were
uploaded to YouTube and corruption could have
occurred when you converted and downloaded
them...sometimes it happens.

Personally, I just play the YouTube video online
and then copy the .flv file from my Temporary
Internet Files Folder to My Videos Folder.

The freeware VLC Media Player will play the .flv files.

If I need to convert the .flv file to .wmv or some other
format I use the freeware SUPER.

Yes that makes sense. It's totally different editing a file than playing
it. A player can skip the odd corrupted frame, whereas an editer will
just..................... fail
