Matt

Using FP 2000 I am switching hosts and I wanted to publish my site the new
site before I modify the DNS#'s so that the site never appears to go down
during the transition( I was iffy about this but the owner of the new
hosting company suggested this and assured me that it would work). The
problem is that I can't publish to the new host. It keeps telling me that
the FP extensions aren't installed even though they have verified that they
are and that there aren't any problems. The url they gave me to publish to
is :
http://thebe.affordablehost.com/~username/ (obviously I replace the username
portion with the actual user name). They tell me the problem is that FP is
striping off the ~username and trying to publish to the root of the server.
Is this because I haven't transferred my DNS#'s to point to the new server
yet or is it something else?

I've tried that, and I've tried publishing to subdirectories within the main
folder but frontpage tells me every time that the extensions aren't
installed.

Hola!

Someone has to take this question seriously..
I have experienced the same problem with 3 websites lately.

Frontpage tells me the Extensions are not installed - the host is 110 %
sure it is installed.
It s a" poor man`s soulution " beeing forced to use FTP when updating
pages for clients.

By use FTP you have corrupted the extensions and they need to be
re-installed by your host.

This is common mistake that users make, if you know the extensions are
installed, but can not connect via FP, do not use FTP, as that will not
solve the problem, it will only make it worse.

When are getting the message about no extensions, when you attempt to open
the web directly in FP via http:// or when publishing?

I get mine every time I try to publish. I can even go into the CPanel and
remove the extensions and then reinstall them and I still have the problem.
My host says that FrontPage is ignoring the folder on the server that my
site is set up on and trying to publish directly to the root of the server
itself.

Matt, your host does not have the server and/or permissions configured
correctly.

If you have domain name and are publishing to that domain name, then as long
as the host has the domain name pointing to the correct folder on the
server, then you would have no problems publishing.

The only reason FP would ignore the folder, is because it is not aware of
the folder, since the host hasn't point the domain to it.

It is also sound like your host is using shared IPs, I would suggest you
find a host that offer accounts with static IPs, in the long term you will
have less problems.

See this is where I think I'm having my problem. My host told me that I
could publish to the server before the domain name was pointed to it. They
said that I could publish to the directory and then redirect my DNS#s from
my old host to them so that there would never be a moment during the DNS
transfer when the site would appear down. I didn't think this would be
possible with FrontPage, but they were positive that I wouldn't have any
problems and assured me that they had clients do this in the past. I could
see how you could do this with FTP and a regular site but not with FrontPage
extensions.

Matt,

This is clearly a case where the host doesn't understand how the FP
extensions work.

They would have to have the FP extensions installed to their domain and the
~username folder would have to be subweb with author permission, then you
would be able to use FP to publish to it via FP's http mode.

Suggestion: Find another host.
Well that's the odd thing, I've been using them for a couple of years with
two other FrontPage sites and have never encountered this problem. They've
always been extremely helpful and I have never had any sort of FrontPage
related problem.

Ok, maybe you just got a tech that not familiar with how the FP extensions
work.

Knowing my luck, the one teck they had that knew anything about FP
extensions probably quit last week.

We've only offered CPanel and FP extensions for less than 6 months. ;-)
You are correct, I did in fact have you confused with another host on this
matter, my mistake. I have everything set up as short cuts and tend to
loose track of which site is hosted by which company (except when the bill
comes up). I only have one other account with you and it's only been
running for about 5 months. But as everyone in this news group has told me
there is only one way to upload a frontpage site without destroyuing the
extensions and that's to publish it with the software. As Thomas pointed
out "by use FTP you have corrupted the extensions and they need to be
re-installed by your host." So I don't really see how I would be able to
upload the site without first forwarding the DNS.
