Public IP Address?

My OS is win2K with SSI installed. I just bought
a router. Three PCs connect to the router with
network cable. The router connects a cable-modem
and then to Internet.

The small home network is OK for surfing the Internet.
But using "ipconfig" checking the IP address it only
shows "192.168.0.102", no public IP address. My friends
can not fetch the files in the "wwwroot/ftproot" of my PC.

In a home network, how to know Public IP address?

To access computers/services on your home network users on the Internet
need to know the IP Address of your router. You then port forward the
correct ports in your router to the private IP Address of the computer on
your LAN providing the service.

You can use a dynamic DNS service such as no-ip.com, dnstogo.com,
dyndns.com, etc. so that users do not have to determine the IP Address of
your router. They only need to remember your router's host name. E.G. ftp
yourroutersname.no-ip.org will allow users to connect to your router and
because you port forwarded the ftp ports to your ftp server they will
automatically connect to the server.

Probably your router has management software that can reveal its public IP.
However, an easy way to find a NAT router's public IP is to use Outlook
Express on one of the lan machines and send yourself an e-mail. When the
e-mail is received, right click on it and select properties. Click the
Details tab - the last 'Received from' line is your public IP.

Minyu...

Which router model do you have? Most of them have a web interface and you
get there by putting in the local IP address of the router. Generally it is
192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and I have seen that at 192.168.1.2 but your
documentation will tell you the default settings.

In your web admin of the router, you will usually see the public IP address
assigned to it. For FTP access, you may have to turn on port 21 and
possibly 20. Some routers, like Belkin, come with preset app settings so
you can just pick the app and it will make the settings to the router for
you.
