Where do I place the public IP address for a connection
to my office XP Pro machine-- on the PC or on the Linksys
router that the PC is connected to? Will I still be able
to connect to another PC on the same router(LAN)if the
public address is on the one PC(XP Pro)?

I'm not sure that I understand your real question, but --
the normal arrangement is that all PCs connected to a router
will use DHCP to acquire a dynamically assigned IP Address
from the router, and the router will also use DHCP on its
upstream-side to acquire an IPA from its server. At the
lowest level of this IPA tree-structure, your PC can directly
see all other PCs at the same level; your PC can also see
other nodes throughout the IPA jungle, but only through a
tranparent address mapping which is managed by the router.
