I've tried searching this group and others but I just can't find an
anwser, I'm hoping it's possible to do what I want to do.
Currently we have 2 Public DNS servers holding the DNS entries for
about 200 domain names. One of them is an NT box which we're trying to
replace. The NT server is acting as the secondary server to a windows
2000 server. We're bringing a new server online at another location in
order to offer redundancy and replace the NT server.
I'm required to use an internal naming convention for the servers by
my managers. the server's name is based on Location, psychical
hardware and purpose. I would like our public DNS server names to be
different from the actual server name such as NS1.example.com
NS2.example.com.
After reading the knowledge base it looks like windows server 2003
draws the SOA data on a new zone file from the computer name. Is there
anyway to tell the DNS server that it should always think of it's self
as "NS1.example.com" rather than MDV-DNSHP2.internal.local as it's
computer name is?
This server is not part of an AD nor will it be.
