Public Calendar won't send reminders

I just created a calendar in a public folder and copied
all of the calendar items from my personal folder to it.
I want to use the public one as my main working calendar.
When I set up a new appt in the public calendar, a pop-up
box says that the reminder won't be sent because "the item
is not in your Calendar or Tasks folder." Can this be
fixed? Or should I not be using the public folder as my
working calendar?
