Hot Rats

I've had my PC for about 2 years. I have an Athlon 1.4, 2 HDD of 20 and 60
gig, 64mb video card and 512 meg of RAM plus a Cd and DVD drive.

Basically tonight the PSU packed up (judging by the smell coming from it).
It was a generic 300W ATX that came from ebuyer.

I'm wondering, does the fact that the PSU packed up suggest I need a PSU
with more than 300W, especially as it's only 2 years old. Maybe 400W?

All comments welcome, thanks

I don't think it would a thing of too much draw and premature death...just another cheap PSU that came with the case. 350w should be
plenty 400w if you can afford it,,,,\

You need a 'high quality' power supply. The cheap ones don't always supply
their rated wattage and they crap out easily. Get an Antec.

Considering your hardware, I'm surprised a generic 300W PSU lasted that
long. Look for an Enermax, Antec or Sparkle/Fortron rated for a minimum of
350W.

Your PSU fan exhausts air from the entire computer. A "smell" coming out
the rear of your PSU does not *positively* mean a bad PSU.

Check the operation of your PSU, and if it *is* bad, replace it with a
high quality PSU.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post, it's appreciated.

Try blowing dirt out of your power supply and your case.

Hot dust doesn't smell so good.
