Just a few days ago I noticed a fan noise.

I isolated it to the PSU.

Sometimes it gets pretty annoying. A good thump on the side of the case
will supress it.........for a while...

Here's the question..(I know the PSU's gonna shit on me soon enough) Should
I worry about a fire hazard?

I leave the machine running while I'm P2P'ing all day and I'm at work 50
miles away.

Thanks,

Why even worry? PSUs are pretty cheap and one of these days that fan is
going to go and the PSU is then history. I would replace it ASAP and give
yourself some piece of mind. Besides if the PSU does go and take the MB with
it then the price of the PSU would have seemed like even more of a bargain.

Of course you could go the even cheaper route and replace the fan itself but
if you suspect that the PSU has been overheating then go for the new unit.

Agreed. The last PSU I saw fail literally threw huge sparks halfway across
the room. It scared the shit out of me. It also destroyed every connected
drive. Ironically, the Mainboard and CPU were fine though. Anyway, replace
that puppy. Try a Seasonic brand. -Dave

I've replaced a couple of PSU's that had the same problem. What I did
discover is that they both used standard 8cm case fans at the back and each
time these fans were simply wearing out. However it is not so simple to
replace the fans as the standard case fan wires are soldered to the board
rather than just plugged in, and PSU's can store electricity inside so could
give a shock even when not connected to the mains, much like a monitor, so I
would never recommend opening one up.

Yes, I think for safety's sake you should replace the PSU.

Well dang it!

For the record, it's a Haikong 400w ATX. I picked it up at a show about 5
or 6 months ago, new for $25.

Is Antec overrated/overpriced, or is it good stuff? I'm tired of messing
with junk just because it's cheap.

What about Seasonic as Dave C. mentioned?

Just for good measure, I think I'll shut it down tomorrow while I'm working.

Thanks for the info guys,

Why don't you just open the power supply and replace the fan?

Errrr......because it says all over the thing *NOT TO*.

I build computers, I know shit about capacitors and what's safe and not safe
to touch.

At any rate, when this one shits on me I'm getting an Antec.
