Last night I finally made a decision and placed my order for an MSI K8N Neo2
Platinum with an Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester. I'm still struggling with the
RAM and Case/PSU decision. I want the ability to overclock but I don't want
to go too crazy with the cost.

I don't think I can afford 1gb of RAM so I plan to settle for 512. Is this
a big mistake or can I get by for a while until I can afford some more? I
hope I'm correct in thinking that there will be room for two more Dimm's in
the future.

There is one RAM That I'm considering, please tell me what you think.
pqi TURBO Series Dual Channel model#PQI3200-512DAH
This is 2x256mb total of 512mb. If you have a better idea, please include a
Model number if you can. It's difficult to know if I'm finding the correct
thing without the actual model number.

As for a case, I'd like to get the PSU and case together. I found an Antec
case with a 380watt Antec True Power PSU. I know that True Powers are
supposed to be good but is 380 watts too small?
I have 2 Harddrives, 1 CDRW, 1 DVDRW, 1-3.5 floppy drive, ati Radeon 9600xt
video card, ati TV card, etc. I hope that's enough info. As before, any
specific suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for all of your help

Buy the cheapest PSU you you can find. Preferably one with visible scorch
marks and oil leaking out the vent holes. Solder balls rattling around
inside are always a plus, but not mandatory. Then get a really expensive
water cooling kit...

On second thought, ignore all that. I think I've gotten my threads
confused.

I cannot help you with type of RAM, but 512 MB should be enough initially
unless you do something that needs much more.

For my Athlon 64 3200+ (2 GHz, 1M cache) ClawHammer with 1g RAM, 200g
HD, CD, DVD, multi-media card reader, and 128 MB 6800 video, I am using an
Antec SmartPower 350, which at most uses about 130 watts AC at the wall
outlet (Kill A Watt meter). Although, when I first tried bumping up from
FX 5200 to FX 5700LE video (125 watts max AC), it would not even boot
with the overrated 250w PSU in my HP PC. But I would think the 380w Antec
should do.

The only way to tell if the ram is any good is to actually research the
ram chips used on the dimm. That said, I find some good ram, then find it
on the cheapest dimm I could find. At a minimum, I'd get PC4000 ram at
this time. It will allow you to overclock as much as you want and it
doesn't cost that much more.

I wouldn't use a 380W PSU. If you want Antec, get a True Power 480 or 550.
Personally, I use an $18 600W, but that's because I don't know what I'm
doing (according to others).:-)

From Newegg
PDP Systems (Patriot) 2x256 $87.00
Cas Latency: 2-3-2-5-T1
Model#: PDC5123200LLK
Item#: N82E16820220002

I have recently used this memory on a Neo2 Platinum with a 3000+ for
my brother....runs really nice and stable and if you wish it will
overclock very good depending on your particular board. We also used
the Antec Sonata case with a 380 True Power supply running CDRW,
DVDRW, floppy, two hard drives, 9600SE. Seems ok for now.
The PQI memory is probably good stuff....I just haven't had any
dealings with it. I just got hooked on the Patriot stuff some time
ago and so far I have not found any problems with it.
