PST woes

Something ate my PST file. I think it was a virus. I
tried Norton Un-Erase and various other recovery and
locator remedies, but all the data in my Personal Folders
file is gone. I do have a 4-month old backup, which I've
imported. But now, the PST file is saved to the backup
location whenever I exit Outlook. I want it saved in the
C:\windows\local settings\application data\ etc. address
where it customarily lives, How can I make Outlook do this?

You can move the file when Outlook is closed. Then start Outlook again and
it will prompt you for the location of the pst-file.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, and am now utterly
confused. My data all loads, but then the system tells me
the backup file is missing and that I should create a new
one. So now I have two files: one's called
MSFTOutlookContactsBackup2.pst -- which is (or was) in a
ZIP drive. The other one is Personal Folders (2).pst,
which is in the traditional C:\WIndows\LocalSettings\App
Data etc folder.

So does this imply that Outlook is loading from the
traditional source, and then looking around for other pst
files for some reason?

Also: have you ever heard of a virus that eats PST files?
I was really dismayed when I lost months worth of contact
info.

Also: how can I make the search function work in these
newsgroups. I fill in the proper data, but there doesn't
seem to be a button which triggers an actual search...

When you go to File-> Data File Management (Outlook 2002 and 2003) you get
an overview of your connected pst-file. Here you can also remove the
additional one.

I never looked into any pst-eating virusses but I have encoutered it myself
once as well. Fortunately I had a recent back-up so the damage wasn't too
bad. I also leave my messages on the server of my ISP for 3 days so I could
restore my most recent messages as well.

I see that you are working on the webbased newsgroup client. The search
function isn't working there (or at least not for my queries :-D). You can
however use Outlook Express as a newsclient and let is connect to
msnews.microsoft.com. The name of the newsgroup is then
microsoft.public.outlook.general.

Roady, thank you very much for your dilligent, thoughtful
responses! I have Outlook 2000, so there doesn't seem to
be any "Data File Management" choice in the File menu.
I'm still pretty confused about Archiving/Backups/
Exporting/etc, but I did find a MSFT whitepaper which
suggested I simply go to my Personal Folders file, copy
it, and move it manually to a desired location. Good
idea, that, and simpler than Exporting -- which requires
answers to many puzzling and seemingly contradictory
options.

Do you recommend the Personal Folder Backup Utility? I
see that one can download it from MSFT website.

PS: I found out how to search! I had to drag down the
border of the search box to find the appropriate button,
but it works very well and I've found some valuable
insights.
