i am trying to move a pst file into outlook 2000 which i had exported from
another computer i had into my new one. both had xp media, brand new, i have
copied to c drive on new, removed read only attribute...i have tried
import....open..new pst file and they all come up with error message about
properties. now get this... i found an earlier version which i had saved and
it opens but it's from june 2005. my new saved pst from 27dec2005 does not
open. both from same system..saved same way and both have same propeties

Exact err msg might be usefull.
Run scanpst.exe on the pst.
Do NOT import, but open within OL
However neither exporting or importing a pst is not reccommended. With OL
closed a simple file copy is all that is required.

If after running scanpst you are still unable to open the pst then likely
the export process corrupted it.

it reads "Properties for this information service must be defined prior to
use" then click ok then " The file is not compatible with this version of
the Personal Folders information service. Contact your administrator". also i
ran scanpst.exe on c drive. should i run it on my removable drive where the
backup is in it's original location. my backup drive is from my laptop which
no longer works. i put the hard drive into a 2.5 enclosure and use it as a
backup drive now.

Was this .pst file created with Outlook 2003? If yes, it is unusable by
previous versions. You will need to create a new .pst file in Outlook 2003
and ensure you choose the 97-2002 format for it. Then copy all of your
items from the2003 .pst file to the 97-2002 file. Close Outlook. Copy that
new 97-2002 .pst file to the old computer, paste it where you want (My
Documents is good as most people back that up on a regular basis). Rename
the default .pst file the 2000 Outlook is currently using and then open
Outlook. when it complains, point it to My Documents and your 97-2002 .pst
file.

Have similar issue, don't see how this post was actually closed. Situation. XP Home, Office 2000 with outlook. Outlook upgraded to 2002. All service releases in place and everything apparently functional. As normal practice would periodically copy pst to a backup directory with outlook shut down. Operating system lockup requiring reformat a few days ago. Reinstalled all, with updates from MS, etc. For both Office and XP, I have had MS online check for all updates and I'm current. Outlook starts OK, but when I try to open or import any of my old files from within outlook, I recieve the message " the file ... is not compatible with this version of the Personal Folders Information Service. Contact your administrator." on all of the files, except one from back in 2004. I took a copy of some of the files to a friend's system and he could open them just fine after I copied them onto his hard drive. I can create new personal folders OK but have not found any way to
retrieve all of my old info. I even downloaded the backup utility and tried to pull the files in (futile attempt, but I'm getting deparate)

How foolish I am - must be old age creeping in. I checked with my friend
and found that his system was using Office 2003. I started digging in my many
storage places and I found that I did in fact, have Office 2003 (along with
every version since the original office came out for Win95) but had totally
forgotten and didn't install it. Have just installed and all is working OK.
I should have known when the icons didn't have the little multicolored Office
Icon - the system did not recognize them. In fact all of these old files
were in the 2003 format. Sorry for the bother.
