.pst gone? - I mistakenly removed office!!

Hi,

I run xp. I was trying to some of the of office 2003 and went to "add/
remove" programs. I expected it to pop up a window that would allow me
to remove just powerpoint and excel, but it did not and it removed
everything - inlcluding outlook which has all my emails!

Is my email lost forever? I did a system restore (to before the
uninstall) and while the "word" and "outlook" icons appear on the
menu, it cant be opened and asks for me to insert the disk. I want to
know how I can revert in the most painless way. If I have to insert
the disk, I can, but I am afraid it will overwrite my actual outlook
files.

Please help me!!!

Not knowing how your email was setup - I cannot say with 100% certainty.
However - uninstalling Microsoft Office will not usually erase the users PST
files - which is how Outlook would store your email.

Start button --> run --> type in:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

--> Click OK.

Is there a PST file in that directory? Likely "outlook.pst"?

Copy that elsewhere for safe-keeping, reinstall Office/Outlook, configure
your email following your service providers setup instructions and then - if
necessary - in Outlook...

File --> Import or Export --> Import from another program or file -->
Personal Folder File (.pst) --> browse for the outlook.pst file from above
and continue with the prompts...

The Outlook MVPs always recommend NOT to import a native pst file but to
open it. Why?

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

System restore does NOT back up applications, it is not a full backup
utility, it only backs up the registry and system files, you will need to
reinstall your Office applications from the original media.
 
Never heard of an Office removal that was not pre-empted by asking the user
if you're sure you want to...

Do a search for outlook.pst on your c: partition.

Last, but not least, backup your outlook.pst to removable media
intermittently. Both 2K and 2003 has an optional backup for that to the
location of your choice. Its an optional update for either at the update
site.
