I just noticed that the .pst files that I wisely (?) archived on a CD could
not be opened directly into Outlook 2000.

It works only if one copies the file to a HD to remove the read-only
attribute.

I'm surprised because other apps open read-only files directly.

Is it definitely a bad idea to archive .pst files on a CD or am I missing
something ?

TIA,

You're not missing anything. It's not a bad idea. We don't all have spare
hard drives for backup and archiving. Just remember to remove the read only
attribute when you store on a CD. PST files are not like other data files
since they require read/write access at all times.

However this means transferring the file back to a HD before reusing it in
Outlook, because even on a CD-RW the attribute cannot be changed to
read-only directly.

Maybe with a CD formatted with DirectCD... I'll try this when I have some
time.

Nope. Still has to be transferred onto a hard drive and the 'read
only' attribute must be removed before being able to be read.

Did you get any answers to your question? I seem to have
the same problem; when I attempt to import pst files I
burned into a CD, I get the message that I do not have
the permission required to access the file......

You have to copy the PST file to your hard drive first. Then right click the
PST file, choose Properties, and clear the read only tab. Then you should be
able to access the PST.
