Ive seen many people asking about this around the web but have yet to see a
useful answer. I use Outlook XP with windows XP and over recent months it has
become increasingly unstable.

Issues:
Above message shown usually (but not always) when I launch Outlook. Then
takes 3-10 minutes to launch.
Programme does not back-up when closed down (I have backup utility installed).
Programme does not shut down when closed and is still in File Manager. I
know it is meant to remain for a short while but it just stays there forever
(even after waiting a long time). It then does not usually reopen if I try to
launch it again. I end up using "Knock-out" to kill one of the processes, and
am then told that it hasnt shut down properly and I have to wait again.

Attempts at cure:

Emptied deleted items.
Reinstalled Outlook.
Detect & Repair.
Scan pst.

Have ended up changing name of pst file. Am becoming terrified of fiddling
any more as my mail data is very important.

pst file is 2 1/2 yrs old and is 1.4 GB.

Cheers
Peter

Try starting Outlook once in safe mode (Start>Run, enter "outlook.exe /safe"
(without the quotes) in the Open field).
