pst backward compatible ?

I am running OL2003 and want to go back to OL2000... is the pst
backward compatible ?

Not if you created it in Outlook 2003 using the Outlook 2003/Unicode format.
Create a new .pst in OL2003 using the OL97-2002 format, then export to that
file.

I believe that I understand what your saying here however a step
further... how would I deal with my archive file ?

An archive file is just another .pst file. The same applies to it.
