My wife recently dedeided to upgrade from Office 2003 to Office XP. (Yes, I
know it is a downgrade)
Unfortunately after doing so we have been unable to open out Outlook
mailboxes or address books.

Is there a compatibility issue ? Or is there some trick that I don't know
of....

Thanks in advance for any help...

OL2003 can utilize a PST format that's unreadable by earlier versions of
Outlook. The new format allows for larger PSTs, etc.

Any particular reason your wife decided on this 'upgrade'?

Explain what you actually did. Outlook only has one data file. Message
Folders are not separate from Contacts. There is no address book. What are
you unable to open and how did you try?
An Outlook Data File created in Outlook 2003 is not compatible with earlier
versions unless you expressly created it in "Outlook 97-2002" format.

According to my wife:

- "I needed a viewer that I knew XP had so I decided to upgrade your
machine. When I put the CD in the autorun started and it asked if I wanted
to upgrade a bunch of things in cluding Outlook. So I said yes."

- From that point on, Outlook has given an error message when attempting to
open the mailbox....(both hers and mine.)

This make sense ?

Thanks so much for the help.

RE"Outlook Data File created in Outlook 2003 is not compatible with earlier
versions". So, assuming that I can get OL 2003 re-loaded I shoudl be able
to open the mailboxes.....

Appreciate the help and will see if I can find my 2003 disk.

Oh, ouch. That is a mess. Installing an older version over a new is always a
disaster. Fortunately your data should be fine. Make sure you find and
backup your Outlook Data File (backup all files with a *.pst extension),
then uninstall Office completely and reinstall Office 2003. Create a new
profile and configure it to use your Outlook Data File. Use the instructions

Thanks for your help. I was thinking this was what I was going to have to
do. Of course, we have recently moved (2 weeks ago) and of course all my CD
are somewhere......shoudl be fun trying to find them.

Anyway. Aprreciate the help. -t
