PSC 500 Printer unusable after restart

I just upgraded from ME to XP and now after installing my HP PSC
500, every time I restart the machine the Scanner is missing from the
list of scanners and the printer won't print "print failed" message.
The only way to reinstate the printer is to delete it and then go to the
device manager and ports for the LPT, uncheck the "enable plug and
play", click ok, check "enable plug and play" and then unplug the
printer parallel cable and reconnect. The OS will then see the new
hardware and install it. This is good until the next restart or
shutdown. Any idea how to fix this problem>

Thanks

Byte,
The HP web site does not have drivers for the PSC 500 printer. It
states:

Microsoft(R) Windows XP already contains drivers provided by HP for the
HP all-in-one models listed below.

All of the printing and scanning drivers required to print and scan were
included with Windows XP. No additional software is required or
available for download or ordering. Windows XP also contains much of the
functionality that was previously supplied by the HP software. HP will
not be releasing any additional Windows XP software for these models.

If you are not able to print or scan after installing the built in
drivers, refer to HP document Solving Problems When You Install
Microsoft Windows XP Print and Scan Drivers (bpu01862).

This document provides instructions for installing the following
products in Windows XP:

* HP PSC 500 series (PSC 500 and PSC 500xi)"

Any other ideas?

Thanks

OK, you'll need to completely uninstall the PSC and start anew. I also have
an HP PSC (different model) and love it. Disconnect the unit from the PC,
uninstall and reboot. DO NOT connect it while installing the software until
told to do so during the installation process. The Scanner actually uses the
Twain drivers
that are already in XP and that goes for the Copier also.

Byte,
I completely uninstalled the printer and followed the process to
re-install. All works fine until I restart my machine. That when the
scanner is gone and the printer doesn't print.

What is the LPT set to in the BIOS?

Did you follow the instructions at the HP website?

Cari,
I followed the instructions and the Bios is set to ECP. I had been
using this printer on ME before I upgraded to XP.
