I followed the troubleshooting guide at hp.com and it said to get firmware
and clean the terminals to try and solve this error. Neither of these
worked. I refill my own cartridges. Would refilling cause this error? My
next step I guess is to break down and get some new cartridges. I can't
even scan or fax until the error is cleared.

Any suggestions?

Jon I run DJ7150 // DJ5550 and refill the #56 and #57 with success ... BUT
both printers have cartridge recognition .. if the cart is inserted gently
and latched you get cart. error ... even with cleaning cart and cradle ...
solution insert the cart FIRMLY but NOT with force also wiggle is side to
side THEN close that latch this sovles the problem.

I have always chosen HP for their bottom loading paper trays. I HATE the
top fed "paper sticking up" style printers which seems to be most all
others. However if HP makes it harder to refill than the other guys I just
may have to switch brands.

Are you having cart. recog. probs due to refilling or on unfilled carts.
???

It happened first after I had refilled one but gave the same error on a
partially refilled one. I got a new black cartridge and that did the
trick...works fine now. If this happens again I will cut my losses and
probably try Canon.

try my tips insert cart firmly and wiggle before latching ... does trickfor
me on DJ7150 and 5550. canon dont offer better Photo printing ... IMHO ...
cpompared to HP 56 // 57 // 58
