Is there any reason why such a profile can't be created using the
profile editor?

I have downloadable profiles that align with 720 and 1080... see my
website's Photo Story 3 > Saving page.

But, as those profiles are for widescreen 16:9 videos, not standard 4:3, and
PS3 only works in standard 4:3, you'll have to distort the images before
importing so the distortion when saving gets things back to looking good.
