PS2 "Knife Swap?"

OK with the first few models of ps2 they claimed the only way to play burned movies ort games was to mod the chip inside or get a "knife swap" kit. When the new Ps2 'slims' were released they claimed to be able to play dvd r's and rw's. OK but, my first ps2 one of the first can and does play burned movies, no complaints at all, but wont play games(backups). The neew slim guys wont play my backed up games either, so whats the deal? Ive already lost half a dozen gam,es to maltreatement and neglect, i wish not to lose anymore.
