When I first try to open I.E. I see, in the task bar, "Detecting proxy
settings". Then I have to wait around 30 or 40 seconds for I.E. to open.
This does not always happen. BTW this just startred in the last month or
so. Sometimes I.E. will open immediately without ""Detecting Proxy
Settings" appearing in task bar. I have a Cable connection and only one
computer. I am not sure what "Detecting proxy settings" means. I can live
with this. Just wondering if this is normal or do I have some kind of
Spyware on my machine.
Thanks for any ideas on this.

Open IE, click tools, click options, click connections, click on LAN
settings, and... Do you have anything listed in there for proxy? Like
automatically detect settings? If so try unticking it unless, of course,
there's stuff in there like 127.0.0.1 on port 8081 in which case your cable
connection might require that you use a proxy server like Adelphia used to
and may still do.

Galen thank you for your advice. I just checked and I do have
Automatically detect settings ticked. Will do as you suggest and see what
happens. When something different happens on my machine I do get a little
worried.
Thank you for your advice.

Galen your advice worked like a charm. I removed the tick in automatically
detecting settings and I no longer get the "Detecting Proxy Settings".
Strange how this setting changed on it's own.

Thank you again for your helpful advice.

You are most welcome and indeed I do make up advice once in a while I do
also try to limit it to a point where the answer given is the MOST likely
answer or a clear acknowledgement that I have no clue and the answer is a
stab in the dark. ;)

Ah well. At least in this case it worked. Either way - keep track of it.
Some software WILL try to change that setting or even your proxy settings.
