proxy server settings lost

We're a bit behind the times here, and most of our
machines are still NT4 but, as we're gradually introducing
W2000 PCs, we're getting a fair number which lose their
proxy settings to access the internet when you log off. To
overcome this, we've had to export the registry key which
contains this stuff to the startup folder of affected
machines. OK, it works, but it's inelegant and you get the
message about information having been added to the
registry when you start up, which confuses users. Is this
a known issue, and is there a fix? I can't find it in the
MS Knowledge Base. Thanks, Roger

Sounds like you have a IE maintenance group policy being applied which is
removing the proxy settings.
Check the local group policies if these clients are in an NT4 domain.
If the domain is Windows 2000 then use GPRESULT /V to check which policies
are being applied to the client and then check the maintenance policies.

If this only occurs on the first logon and works on subsequent logons then
you should look at the INSTALL.INS file which IEAK builds of IE use to setup
preferences. Remove any proxy values or ensure the correct ones are set.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that - it's an NT domain, and we don't use
group policies. It seems to affect random users, but
mostly those who we have given W2000 machines to!

We use a standard installation of IE6 for everybody.

Any more ideas?

Thanks again
Roger
