Zone Alarm reports that Proxomitron keeps trying to access the
internet (upon boot-up) even though no program has been invoked that
might use it.

Anyone else having this? Might it be a trojan at work?

Thanks.

PS I use Mozilla Firebird and "regular" Mozilla. Of course, IE6 is
also installed. System is XP Home, SP1.

I seem to recall it does that - I just tick the 'always allow' box in
ZA and forget about it.

Just follow Mr Steve H advice. Proxomitron just make a highway
to a part of a heaven for you.

Thanks for Proxomitron, Scott! Hope you're not killed by Dumbass.

Proxomitron is a proxy server. It needs to access the Internet in order to
work.

Trying to access on bootup could be a Trojan. It could also be some
software trying to phone home to look for updates. It could even be Windows
trying to access the Windows Update site. Do you have automatic updates
enabled for Windows?

I'm sure someone will correct me on this, but couldn't it be that as
soon as Proxo is started it tries to connect to its proxy server (
i.e. your own machine )?
As part of network activity this would trigger a response from ZA, as
you'd expect.

Hopefully someone will clarify - I'm sure the OP would be happier with
a technical explanation rather than a simple "It's OK".

Thanks to everyone for the replies!

I should clarify that Proxomitron is trying to access the net perhaps
as late as a few minutes after boot-up and long after its icon appears
in the task bar.

What makes me suspicious? 1) It never did this before in the several
months I've had it loaded on this XP box. 2) Nothing should be
"phoning home" or trying to contact the net at that point as nothing
is set (automatically or manually) to do so.

Symantec AV (Norton), Adaware, Spybot, PestPatrol, (and a couple of
other programs) detect nothing amiss... but I stil wonder.

Thanks, again, to all for your assistance!

Do you have Windows Critical Update set to run automatically on your
PC? (Does XP have a critical update? - I'm a '98 dinosaur) I think
it's usually set to run 5 minutes after bootup. It uses the same
proxy settings as Internet Explorer i.e. via Proxomitron. You may
have to remove or disable it from your task scheduler.

If Proxomitron is trying to access the net, then you should be able
to see what processes are running by opening your firewall program
(I'm not sure how that goes with XP, but I use Sygate Personal
Firewall & can tell straight away which programs are connecting to
Proxomitron, which then tries to access the Internet). It also gives
me the destination address, so I can get an idea of "who" it was
contacting.

If you're using Sygate Firewall (probably the same with others), then
you may need to check it's options to if it is set to check for
updates automatically - I know mine tried to dial up until I changed
it to manual update.
