Hi

On my system (Win XP Pro) Norton NAV 2004 keeps telling me that protoride is
trying to install msupdate.exe in my startup folder.

In itself it is not a problem, NAV is catching it and stopping it.

The problem is why it keeps on trying. I read somewhere that it is a hole I
may have left in internet explorer, but I don't know what.

Could anyone tell me what the hole may be so I can damn it up as best I can,
I have got a tube of silicone sealant ready and only hope that the hole is
so big that it requires 2 tubes :)

Any help appreciated.

You could save the sealant & get another browser. I've been playing
with Firefox & like it so far. I'm still installing the Plug-ins that I
want. But other than that it's very nice & loads pages faster than IE
ever did.

That is a common misconception. The fact that you have a
vulnerability which allows placing an executable into your
startup folder is far more important than is the fact that your
AV is stopping some known malware from exploiting that
vulnerability.

Your AV wouldn't be able stop something unknown to it
from running at startup and ruining your data. It would
be best to not allow any sharing of folders that you don't
absolutely *need* to share (and those needed ones should
have strong passwords). Sharing part of your startup axis
is just begging for trouble.
