I want to protect a single cell in a spreadsheet from
being changed. I want the spreadsheet to function
normally in every other respect. When I turn protection
on certain function on my menu like sum are grayed out and
are not available through the shortcut. How do I stop
excel from doing this while still protecting that one cell?

Tom

Select every cell in the worksheet (Click on the square between Column A and
Row 1 top LH corner)
Hold down the control key and remove selection from the cell(s) you want to
lock.
Go to Format, Cells, Protection and remove the tick from "Locked".
Go back the worksheet and select Tools, Protection and protect the sheet
with or without a password

If you are using XP it gives you a lot of options on which properties you
actually protect.

Alan,

Doing this does not solve my problem. This is in fact
what I have done. When you do this certain shortcut
funcions on the menu like sum are not available at all.
Yes the protection works but the functions do not

Tom,

I am using the XP version of excel

When I am protecting the sheet I tick all the cell attributes except "select
locked cells"
Thus when the sheet is protected everything is available, except you cannot
select a locked cell so you cannot change it in any way. All the functions,
formatting etc are available for the unlocked cells.

This probably does not work on earlier versions.
