I have reviewed the Excel Help list and only find that I
can protect a whole workbook with a password. I want to
protect certain cells within a workSHEET. I don't want
the reader to have to put in a password to open the
worksheet. I want some cells editable while others are
not.

How do I do this?

Hi DL!

If it's only a few cells that you want to protect.

Select all cells by pressing the button at the intersect of row and
column headings
Format > Cells > Protection
Remove Check from "Locked"
OK
Now select the cells that you want to protect [don't forget that you
can select discontiguous cells by pressing and holding down Ctrl]
Format > Cells > Protection
Place Check in "Locked"
OK
Tools > Options > Protection > Protect Sheet
Give and confirm a password [or just press OK if you don't want to
impose one at all]
OK

The password is for changing the protection status of the sheet; not
for allowing entry to the sheet.

It's not very secure protection even with a password but it will serve
to prevent accidental corruption of formulas etc.
