The cells that are protected by protecting a workbook are those that are
locked. By default, all cells are locked so that protecting the workbook
protects all cells. To protect just a few cells, you need to select all and
turn off locked (Format > Cells > Protection tab), and then select just
those few cells and turn it back on. Then, when you protect the workbook,
only those few cells will be protected.
