Hi Guys,
I'm new to group, so hello to all, I am Marcos, from Spain.
My question, is how to protect a PC. It may seem simple, but I would
like to know what steps you would recommend to completely protect a computer
from all threats (virus, spam, spyware, security bugs...). This all has to
be with freeware software. So far, I have Spybot, Antivir Antivirus, windows
update for the security bugs... What else would you do to keep a computer
clean, smooth and protected?
thanks,
markzzz

Practice "safe hex":

Besides Spybot it's a good idea to use AdAware as well. See my web
site for additional suggestions and some links.

I would second that, adaware and spybot are both good but get different
results, if your system is clean than also install spywareblaster. Beyond
anything else you should install firefox/thunderbird or other safe
alternatives and set them to default. Having done so you will still need to
tamp down IE settings even if it is not used. Another step is to look
through various MS 'services' & network components to find leaks.

In addition to the advice you have already received, get a free ware
program like WinPatrol, to monitor changes being attempted to your
registry, startup programs, host file and file associations. This can be
very important, if you unintentionally run in to spyware or Trojans. I
would strongly recommend one shareware program to go along with what you
already have: BOClean. It's an excellent risk reduction safeguard, in
case you have a lapse in safe computing behavior.

Do you mean something other than Boclean?.I dont belive it is shareware ,
but it is worth purchasing ,if you want multilayered approach to
virus/trojan detection nevertheless.

No, I meant BOClean. Probably should have called it "payware". I tend to
think of shareware as something one pays for.

In addition to all of the good advice already given, be sure to use a
good Firewall such as Zone Alarm.

The best method to secure your pc is to disconnect it from the internet.
The second best method can be downloaded (for free) from:

Wipe the harddrive and install a Linux distro then you will be pretty
safe....
