i have done the unforgiveable, protected a workbook and forgotten the
password. can anyone suggest a solution?

Hi Andy!

The following sites advertise ability to recover, amongst other
things, Excel file passwords. These passwords are imposed when saving
Excel files and are not to be confused with *internal* passwords on
sheets and workbook structure. For those see the free tool available

Elcomsoft Advanced Office XP Password Recovery

Unregistered (trial) version can be used during 30 days after
installation (although it doesn't expire, actually) and has some
limitations. They have programs for earlier versions. Cost of license
$30. Reported to take a long time but worked in finding a 12 character
lower case password. Like most brute force approaches the fastest CPU
speed computer available should be used.

Hi Andy,

Yes, there are various tools available online that can enable you to
retrieve a lost or forgotten password in an MS Excel file.

Try searching Google or visit:

http://www.intertek.org.uk/downloads/excel.html

N.B. Please do not use these tools to open any file unless you are
authorized to do so.
