Protected Storage not running

Hi everyone,
The quick recap to this strangeness is that the inline autocomplete in IE
isn't working and just about every where else that the system would "save"
log in names and / or passwords, it wouldn't work. For example, during the
load of Outlook it would save the user name but will never save the password
even though I click on the option for it to save it.

Some good person pointed me to a knowledgebase article (306895) which gave
me some more information but also scared me. One of the steps was to check
that the Protected Storage Service was running and to start it if it wasn't.
Well, I had a heart-beat skipping moment when I went through the services
and discovered the service wasn't even listed!

Let me make two other points and then I'll shut up. On a separate drive in
the same machine I have a second copy of XP Pro which is for a class I'm
taking. When booted off that, the service is there and up and running and
as near as I can tell, everything is working on that drive the way it is
suppose to. My last point is that the primary XP Pro drive is an upgrade
from XP home and it was not a smooth upgrade. There were too many weird
events to keep track of and I thought I finally had the drive up and running
properly when I stumbled onto the autocomplete / password issues.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Richard

Richard,

If the Protected Storage service is not listed, get the default 'Services' REG script from www.blackviper.com. As you say, the upgrade was not smooth, I'd also consider a repair or clean installation of XP.
