Anyone have a favourite way to protect a dir from deletion but
still allow writing to that dir? Maybe I just need to do it
directly in my win98 interface?

You can protect files by making them "read-only" but not folder ...
but anyway, if you mistakenly delete file or folder, you can always
recover them from the Recycle Bin.

Or keep a copy of the directory at a different location, preferably on
another drive.

Have a look at NoDelete

http://tucows.mundofree.com/winme/preview/138494.html

It won't protect the directory, but will protect all selected files in
the directory.
You can delete the directory to the recycle bin by accident, but then
cannot empty it from the bin...

Very nice app, deserves a wider audience...
