Opinions?

Anyone noticed any system slow downs, higher crash rates, longer boot
times, higher memory usage, etc.?

No, most apps I have that DO use it only use it when necessary (i.e.
when they are running)

Its the "Windows Journal Viewer" that concerns me.

None so far ...
I need to install it because I running some CAD which require it.

because of security reasons?

IIRC there is a patch

and besides you would need it for handwriting if using with MSN Messenger

Okay. I heard that it adds a lot of registry keys and I was thinking that
might affect performance.

Dunno about that. I couldn't install it on my Win98 system even if I wanted
to.

nope. it is basically a runtime environment that only gets used when
called upon by a program or system call. and even when those calls are
made, i notice aboslutely no problems.

my system is a slightly older one, too:
pentium 4 1.7ghz w/ 512 pc133 ram - win xp pro sp2 w/ .net

Thanks.

I installed it and it does look a bit like VB on steroids.

Most of the files went into these two folders:

c:\WIN98\assembly\
(doesn't allow folder navigation in Winderz and doesn't show file
properties)

c:\WIN98\Microsoft.NET\Framework\

Not much went into the system folder.

Thanks.

Yeah, I installed it and it seems all right. Not exactly easy on disk
space, though. Might get some of that space back by way of future smaller
app sizes.

INCTRL 4 (disk contents comparison)

registry keys added: (6873)
registry key values added: (9589)
registry key values changed: (7)
Total weight gain = about 655k or 12% increase in my registry size

files and directories added: (368)
Total disk space used = about 70MB
20% increase in Win98 folder size (was 354 MB).
