Would anyone care to shed some light on the difference between 'Archive' and
'Read-only' in a typical Property window? I presume to know the 'Hidden'
value's meaning but have always wondered if (at all) I should alter the
other two and what the consequences might be.

Read Only attribute means that the file can be viewed but not changed and
the changes saved.

Archive attribute is used for backup. If you use a backup program, the
Archive attribute is cleared when you backup the file. Windows sets the
Archive attribute again when the file is changed. Useful if your backup
program supports selective backups after a full backup. Then the backup
program selectively backups the files with the Archive attribute set. If
you do not use a backup program, you can do anything you want this
attribute. An image program will ignore the attribute.
