Proper Video Card?

I'm thinking of putting an Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 32MB AGP Video Card
in my Gateway E-3200 (550Mhz) with 384mb RAM and running Win98 first
edition, because the onboard ATI Rage card doesn't always engage when
the system is started. (I don't get a bootup screen, and I have to
shut down and restart--so I assume it's the video card). I know the
system will take AGP. In the BIOS, there doesn't seem to be a setting
to disable the onboard video chip. Will this be necessary?

The system uses the Samsung 173P very high quality flat panel monitor
and is used for viewing iamges, word processiong, email...but no gaming.
Is this a proper card for this computer?

I'm not familier with the card but what kind of AGP is it? 2x, 4x, or 8x?
What kind of AGP does the motherboard support? Better check for
incompatibilities first.

It may not be the video card, but if you've already got it, and the
motherboard will support it, it's worth a try. On the other hand, that
computer is of the vintage when there were a lot of motherboards with bad
capacitors.

As far as disabling, one of two things will happen: it will automatically
disable the onboard, or you'll end up with a dual-video setup.
 
The Nvidea GeForce 2 video cards were pretty good cards, but they were (and I
guess still are) touted as graphics/gaming cards. Other than the fact that
it requires a fairly decent video card to drive that monitor, it's probably
overkill for your needs. If you already have it, then it's certainly worth
a try, I'd say.

Yes, I already have the card, so I'll give it a try. It was brought up that I
should see what kind of AGP (2x, 4x, 8x) the motherboard supports. How do I
determine that?

Check the manual for the motherboard, if there isnt an option to disable
onboard video in BIOS, then there is probably a jumper on the mobo itself to
disable it.
