In Windows 2000 is there a setting somewhere to display a
prompt when moving a file, kind of like when you delete a
file and it asks if you are sure you want to delete the
file. We recently had a problem with users mistakenly
moving files to new locations without knowing and would
like to give them the opportunity to change their minds.
Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you

I've never wanted such a thing, so I don't know if it's possible or not. If
they are moving files in Explorer using drag & drop, ^Z undoes things, so
you might see whether that's sufficient. It undoes moves, renames & copies,
at least. There isn't a redo, so you can't scroll back and forth between
action steps like you can in Word or Visual Studio, for example, but it may
yet give you enough to meet your users' needs.

Hi Mike,

For folders, and for files that don't need to be modified, setting the read-only
attribute is an easy solution. For files that need to be modified, maybe this
solution posted by "Mike" in the microsoft.public.win2000.registry group would work
for you.

I finaly found it. We had the same problem here with users draging folders by
mistake.
You can set the drag and drop or copy and paste files confirmation prompt

Localy:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0]

"1802"=dword:00000001

AND on the intranet:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\1]

"1802"=dword:00000001

For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 182569 which
describes how you can use Internet Explorer Security Zone Settings (managed in
the registry) to cause a "Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?"
prompt to appear for all drag/drop/copy/paste/move actions on all files and
folders for a particular Zone (or Zones) [My Computer, Local Intranet Zone,
Trusted sites Zone, Internet Zone, Restricted Sites Zone].
