Hii Sing Chung

I have read the KB article 325379:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379/en-us. There is only one section
which I am not clear of, that is "Upgrading Windows 2000 domain controllers
by using Winnt32.exe".
What I want to do is to join a Windows 2003 server into a Windows 2000
domain as a DC, without upgrading the existing Windows 2000 DCs (4 of them)
to Windows 2003, for obvious reason - not enough Windows 2003 licenses. The
article does not specify whether the upgrading of Windows 2000 DCs to
Windows 2003 DCs is a compulsory step. My questions: 1. Is it compulsory to
upgrade all the DCs to Windows 2003 before I can promote a Windows 2003
server as DC of this domain? Is it that the domain naming master and primary
domain controller role must be held by a Windows 2003 DC in such a domain?

Thanks.

For additional info on upgrading your current W2K AD domain/forest to a W2K3 AD domain/forest see:
http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/archive/2005/11/20/110.aspx

To introduce W2K3 DCs into an W2K AD domain/forest the schema must be updated and the domain must be prepared
However, you have the choice in just upgrading the OS of the current W2K DCs to W2K3 or by just introducing W2K3 DCs and remove the W2K DCs

It is not mandatory to transfer the FSMO roles from a W2K DC to a W2K3 DC, but it will not hurt you either.
For example, Application Partitions (needed for DNS for replication scopes) can only be introduced/used when the domain naming master is on a W2K3 DC and the PDC Emulator will introduce new security principals and descriptors

Thank you. I have read before the blog link you provided.
I still don't fully understand the statement "You have the choice in just upgrading the OS of the current W2K DCs to W2K3 or just introducing W2K3 DCs and remove the W2K DCs". Can I just introduce a W2K3 DC and leave the remaining W2K DCs unchanged (not upgrading them to W2K3)?

In order for W2k03 Servers to operate with W2K Domain Controllers, you must
extend the schema on the existing W2k Schema and Infrastructure master(s),
depending on how many domains you have. It is not compulsory to upgrade your
W2k servers

With W2k03 CD, run adprep /domainprep on infrastructure master(s) and adprep
/forestprep on schema master. After this i was able to join W2k03 Server to
domain as Domain Controller. It does not have to hold a specific role from
memory, and there is no primary domain controller role in w2k03.

It worked for me!

yes you can introduce w2k3 dcs and still have w2k dcs. Because of that the domain functional level can not be higher than Windows 2000 native and the forest functional level cannot be higher than windows 2000
