Is there a way that Powerpoint can control 35 mm slide projectors (e.g.
Kodak Carousell) via a serial port or otherwise? I would need to control
2 projectors.

Not directly, no, but VBA from within PPT or an external application
triggered by an action setting or similar in PPT could conceivably send a
line high on a serial port, which could trigger a relay that closes the
advance switch to the projector or to a multi-projector controller.

I haven't heard of anybody doing this exactly, but if you want to pursue it,
I'd guess that Dick Grier's your man. You might try googling his name.

This does seem a little like striping down a Porsche to use the frame to
build a Corsair ...

You could (if the boss threatened you with loss of employment) use
PowerPoint and custom VBA routines to fire a macro that sends a signal to
the computer to send a signal to an IR/RF remote control accessory that
would fake the IR/RF signal to the 35mm slide projectors. But for all the
cost and headaches of all this additional hardware and software, you would
still have an outdated system that would not allow for editing or any of the
multiple benefits of a real PowerPoint presentation.

In my opinion, you would be far better off, in the long run, to
purchase/rent/hire a slide scanner, and buy an LCD projector.
