Projection Problems

Ashurbanipal

Hey all,

I've been giving PP talks for some time, but cooled off for about
half a year. Now that I returned to it, I am suddenly having tech
issues (with our new projector).

I couldn't get relevant hits at google newsgroup search, and my problems
doesn't seem to be in PPFAQ list (at least what I did read that was
relevant didn't seem to work).

First: how do I get rid of that horrid new presentation interface in PP
XP? The one that has large buttons to advance slides but doesn't show
me the animation as it is occurring (only when it ends) and doesn't
allow me to easily follow hyperlinks? (the PPFAQ directions do not work
for me).

Second: I liked the general performance of PP2000 better. I nuked PP-XP
off my machine and went back to PP2000 (sacrificing the new animations,
etc.), and I am still having the same issue -- I can project and advance
the presentation with the arrow keys, etc. when I depress the minimized
second running copy of the program, but my first running copy is
seperate and shows me only the editing interface. What I used to see on
my laptop was exactly what was happening on screen, as it occurred.
Playing with all the settings, the only way for me to project the
presentation is with the editing interface showing!
Help! How do I fix this issue?

Cheers,
-A, an embarrased grad student that has several presentations blowup on
presentation day

Sounds like you should visit the SlideShow set-up screen which can be found
(strangely enough) under
SlideShow | Set-up ...

1st, to get the presenter view (big buttons to advance with small notes
window) to go away, uncheck the box labeled 'Show Presenter View'. I do not
like this view either since it restricts navigation tools.

2nd, to get the exact same thing on your monitor as is on the screen, change
the Multiple monitors display to 'Use Primary Monitor'. I do not like this
because I can not make corrections or search while the screen is active.

Give those a shot and see if they take care of you.

Sigh... I suppose this kind of tone is to be expected by the
attitude-denizens of usenet. Had you bothered to read my mail, you
would have seen that I tried all the settings under that command.

2nd, to get the exact same thing on your monitor as is on the screen,
change the Multiple monitors display to 'Use Primary Monitor'.

See above.

Thanks to any helpful ppl,

Sorry for your problems and feeling that Bill was not being helpful. I read
your post, then read Bill's reply and saw no need to post as Bill did
address all issues with the exact FIRST steps to fixing your problem (which
leads me to believe he did read your entire post).

Original post said "Playing with all the settings..." unfortunately this
does not really clarify what settings were adjusted ("Had you bothered to
read my mail, you would have seen that I tried all the settings under that
command" which really is not the case for us, the ones trying to be of
assistance), so I would go with an answer like Bill's that clarifies what
settings to check as the best place to start troubleshooting.

-----------------------------------------------------------

OKAY, ONTO SOLVING THE PROBLEMS:

So here is what I think I am reading. When connected to a projector, you do
not see the actual presentation on your laptop. In PPT XP you saw the
presenters view; an image of the slide + speaker notes + advance/reverse
buttons (on your local monitor).
- To eliminate the presenters view (only available in PPT XP-2003) and be
able to mirror the presentation on local and secondary monitors go to
SLIDESHOW >> SETUP SHOW >> uncheck the SHOW PRESENTER VIEW and have the
DISPLAY SLIDESHOW ON dropdown menu set to PRIMARY MONITOR.

But in PPT 2000 you are experiencing a different problem. When connected to
a projector, you also do not see the actual presentation, but rather the
slide in edit mode. Two things to check here:
- Go to SLIDESHOW >> SETUP SHOW >> have dropdown "show on" dialog set to
PRIMARY (not SECOND PLUG & PLAY MONITOR).

In either version of PPT, you should set the computer's display settings to
mirror output vs. extended desktop (with your monitors set to mirror PPT is
not able to do anything but show the presentation on both monitors)
- Go to your computers display settings >> SETTINGS tab >> make sure monitor
two is set to mirror/not have 'extended desktop' or 'extend my windows
desktop onto this monitor' activated (this setting varies depending on the
graphics card in your computer, and sometimes based on its capabilities).

- Also, you wrote, "when I depress the minimized second running copy of the
program..." Could you further explain, I am not certain what is happening
here (you have two presentations open and are switching between them?)

Try all of the above and let us know what was set, what did or did not work
and we'll figure it out.

Aha... this is exactly what I want.

Can you explain briefly the purposes of the "show type" options?

-"Presented by a speaker (full screen"
-"Browsed by an individual (window)"
-"Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)"

hat I was trying to say: I tried all of these "show type" settings under
"set up show" with different options from the "show on" drop down menu
(including show on "primary") without success. As suspected, it has
something to do with multi-monitor setup...

The only thing that worked for me was "presented by a speaker (full
screen)" and "show on secondary monitor" under "set up show." No other
combination worked at all.

- Also, you wrote, "when I depress the minimized second running copy
of the program..." Could you further explain, I am not certain what is
happening here (you have two presentations open and are switching
between them?)

Now under the above-mentioned configuration of options, starting the
presentation by hitting F5 generated a second, minimized PP program
window in the taskbar (to run the presentation, which did project)
as if one had started the program twice and had two running
simultaneously.

The first and original window from which I generated the second by
hitting F5 always remained in edit mode. I had to depress the second
minimized copy of the program in the task bar and use the arrow keys to
advance slides -- I could not see the presentation on my laptop monitor,
and this prevented me from doing things like hitting hyperlinks (because
I couldn't see a cursor on the projection).

If I chose "presented by an individual" and "show on primary monitor"
I could see the presentation on my laptop monitor, but _it would not be
projected_ (only the desktop wallpaper would be projected). Obviously
it wasn't a projector hookup issue, since it would indeed project with
different ("secondary monitor") settings.

Sorry for my initial lack of clarity. I hope this will help describe my
exact problem. Any advice to fix this is greatly appreciated.

Now Bill mentioned he doesn't like mirror-monitors, but prefers to have
the laptop monitor "unfrozen" by the presentation to run searches, etc.
Is there any way that I can toggle the presentation "on" to hit
hyperlinks etc., and then toggle it "off" my laptop monitor so I can run
searches etc. without projecting them? This is my uber-question, and
what I would really like to know.

Also: are the settings to do all that different in PP2000/PP-XP? I
strangely recall PP2000 be much more "plug and play."

- Go to your computers display settings >> SETTINGS tab >> make sure
monitor two is set to mirror/not have 'extended desktop' or 'extend
my windows desktop onto this monitor' activated (this setting varies
depending on the graphics card in your computer, and sometimes based
on its capabilities).

Do not click "extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor," gotcha.
(Sometimes I did, sometimes I didn't, didn't seem to affect the
problem?)

By not clicking this, both monitors should "mirror" each other, if I am
understanding (i.e., I haven't seen any mirror command under either
"set up show" or monitor "display properties." BTW: I am using the XP
OS on the laptop).

Thanks much for your assistance,
-A

Ashurbanipal,

Sorry you took my light heartedness for attitude, I was trying to be light
and helpful. It doesn't seem to have been received that way and for this I
am sorry. Believe it or not, this is one of the few places on the net where
people do help and also try to have some fun in the process.

I'm glad to see that Troy was able to take care of your issue.

Happy presentations ,

Okay, I think we are on the right track. You have definitely tried many
things and have given lots of detailed information to work with.

---------------------------------------------
-"Presented by a speaker (full screen)
This is the 'normal' presentation mode, used at least 90% of the time.
Everything discussed here is based on this mode.
-"Browsed by an individual (window)"
Never really played with this one, so I do not have a good definition of it
right now.
-"Browsed at a kiosk (full screen)"
Overrides some functions, especially useful when mandatory viewer input is
needed to advance slides, etc.

---------------------------------------------
The only thing that worked for me was "presented by a speaker (full
screen)" and "show on secondary monitor" under "set up show." No other
combination worked at all.
Sounds like you are getting things figured out. Yes, use the "presented by a
speaker (full screen)" setting. No do not use "show on secondary monitor"
rather set this to "Primary Monitor." Now where the presentation is shown is
dependent on your display settings (outside PPT). If you have an extended
desktop setup, the presentation will only display on the primary/laptop
monitor. If you have a mirrored setup the presentation will display on both
laptop and projector (in show mode). If the secondary monitor is not active,
presentation will only display on local monitor.

Laptop should have a key combination to toggle through display modes (off,
mirror, extended). What brand/model laptop are you running?

-----------------------------------------------
Now under the above-mentioned configuration of options, starting the
presentation by hitting F5 generated a second, minimized PP program
window in the taskbar (to run the presentation, which did project)
as if one had started the program twice and had two running

The first and original window from which I generated the second by

I couldn't see a cursor on the projection).
Still not clear what is occurring here. But rather than focus on the exact
details here, I believe if the PPT and display setting are configured as
listed above, this issue is eliminated - and you can use hyperlinks because
the presentation is in show mode on both local monitor and projector.

---------------------------------------------------
If I chose "presented by an individual" and "show on primary monitor"
I could see the presentation on my laptop monitor, but _it would not be
projected_ (only the desktop wallpaper would be projected). Obviously
it wasn't a projector hookup issue, since it would indeed project with
different ("secondary monitor") settings.
This tells me that the computer is configured with an extended desktop,
which we should have eliminated with the above configuration.

--------------------------------------------------
Now Bill mentioned he doesn't like mirror-monitors, but prefers to have
the laptop monitor "unfrozen" by the presentation to run searches, etc.
Is there any way that I can toggle the presentation "on" to hit
hyperlinks etc., and then toggle it "off" my laptop monitor so I can run
searches etc. without projecting them? This is my uber-question, and
what I would really like to know.
I personally prefer a mirrored setup. It eliminates a huge number of
technical issues as well as just plain mistakes (ie. exiting presentation,
having other application dialog boxes pop up on the projected screen, etc.)

But to the answer to the uber-question is using an add-in (works in PPT
2000-2002-2003) called PowerShow. Check here for the details:
http://officeone.mvps.org/powershow/powershow.html

----------------------------------------------------
By not clicking this, both monitors should "mirror" each other, if I am
understanding (i.e., I haven't seen any mirror command under either
"set up show" or monitor "display properties." BTW: I am using the XP
OS on the laptop).
Correct. By NOT clicking "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" you
are telling the graphic card to run a mirrored output. Note: if you were
running an extended desktop and then uncheck this option, the result will
most likely be deactivating your secondary monitor altogether. Not a
problem, just a function of most graphics cards. Say Apply/Okay and then
using the laptop function keys toggle the secondary monitor on again (or
activate by going through the advanced display options - my preference).

Side note: which manufacturer of graphics card does the computer run (ATI,
Nvidia, Intel Extreme, etc.). Go to CONTROL PANEL >> DISPLAYS >> SETTINGS
tab >> ADVANCED button >> ADAPTOR tab >> listed under Adaptor Type.

Hope that provides some additional information and allows you to
troubleshoot.

This sounds like what you get when:

- You have the presentation set up to display the slideshow on the second
monitor on a system that supports multiple monitors but ...
- There's no second monitor attached

In that case, the presentation remains in Edit mode on the main screen and you
see an icon for slideshow view of the presentation on the task bar but you
can't activate it.

Does that help ring bells at all?

Thanks to Steve and Troy for their help.

The problem with my configuration is that I didn't have mirrored display
set up using the mirror toggle (function-F5 I think it is). I want to
test this by hooking up the projector before my next talk -- I'll come
back and let you know how it worked.
