Last week I installed some critical updates & now for some
unknown reason I can not install any programs on my
system. Any ideas as to why & how do I get back to where
I can install them?

Hi,

What happens when you try to install them?

Hi Rick,
When I insert the CD into the drive it starts the
setup.exe & the drive light comes on. It runs for just a
few seconds then shuts down & nothing happens. Have
checked the process info. & it shows the setup.exe there.
Have tried transfering the files to desktop & the same
thing happens there also. The setup program is Install
shield & file ver. 5.52.164.0 & is 32 bit. My file system
is the NTFS but can't think that is the problem as have
installed several programs since converting. The progams
that I have tried to install are Yellowstone & Grand Teton
National Parks screen saver & National Geographic Maps.
I have one drive that is a Sony DVD burner & one that is
DVD. Programs will not install from either. Can access
program information from CDs but just can't install.

Hi Larry,

Try cleaning up the installer.

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to "Windows Installer" and double click
it. Stop the service if it is running, set the startup type line to
disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot.

Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

Now reverse the first set of steps and reenable the Windows Installer (You
can just set the startup type to manual). Reboot.

Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software. Use
ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

Now retry installing some software. If it doesn't help, here are some
further articles that may:

Hi Rick,
Tried the above suggested solutions to no avail.
Cleaned the temp files & tried the program again. I have
another program that I tried installing that uses a
different install program & it started the install. Am
just having problems with the Installshield software ver.
5.52.164.0 & don't seem to have problems with other
software.

Hi Rick,
Just wanted to update this post & let you know I fixed
the problem I went into the process part of task manager
& started shuting off running processes one at a time.
Got to one called (lexbces.exe) & when I shut that off the
programs installed. Not sure what this is but it kept the
install from working. Thanks a million for your help &
just maybe this will help someone else down the road.
Went to another computer I have that is running XP &
checked what was running there & went from there. Would
sure be great to know exactly what is required in the
process section to be running so system is stable? Where
can I find this?
Larry

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the feedback and glad to hear you got it going. By the way,
lexbces.exe is part of Lexmark's printer software.
