Ken

I have occasionally received error messages about missing
*.DLL files and Windows XP locked up when shutting down a
few times.

I just removed a voice messaging software program using
Control Panel/Add/Remove. When I rebooted the computer I
could not activate programs by clicking icons on the desk
top. I also could not activate programs by going to
Windows Start/Programs/ and clicking on programs. I tried
Outlook express, Norton Utilities, Norton Antivirus,
Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer would open, but it
would not show directories under C:. Later on it reduced
to MyComputer and would not open directories under that.

I started the computer in the SAFE mode and I could run
programs. I ran Norton Antivirus and no virus' found.

I could not turn off the computer. Windows locked up
at "Saving your settings" and the ON/OFF switch on the
computer did not work. I had to unplug the computer to
shut it down.

Does this sound like a vitrus, XP problem, or other? (THe
computer is only a few months old and has plenty of
capacity - 3GHz, 1G RAM, etc.)I appreciate your
suggestion!!! Thanks.

Hello Ken,

Did the computer hang when shutting down in Safe Mode or just Normal Mode?
If it hung in just Normal mode, then try clean booting your system per the
following KB article -

310353 How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310353

If it hung in Safe Mode, then it is likely file/registry corruption or bad
hardware.

Thanks, Shain. I think I went from SafeMode and by reboot
into Normal Mode without any problem (I'm not positive
though). I will check the publication you indicated.

What do you think about the other problem of programs not
running in the Normal Mode. The only thing I can think of
doing is reinstalling Windows tonight and see what
happens. If I reinstall XP over the existing XP, I assume
it will keep my settings, passwords, etc. won't it? Are
there any disadvantages to reinstalling XP over the
existing XP?

Thanks.

Ken

Hello Ken,

In regards to the programs, did you test them in Safe Mode?

You can reinstall XP on top of the current version and this is called an
in-place upgrade. But there is a chance that something may not work
correctly after you do this, so I would wait until after you test Safe Mode.

Hi Shain,
Thanks for reply. I ran the computer in SafeMode and ran
Norton Anitvirus from Safe Mode -- no Virus's reported. As
I mentioned, I had to remove power from the computer to
turn it off -- so locked up. Last night the computer
turned on and appeared to run fine -- no apparant
problems. I decided to reinstall XP:

I installed Windows as an upgrade. The
installation completed and rebooted the computer. Windows
said I had to re-register my Windows to proceed. I
clicked yes and the I got the following full page error
message. "A problem has been detected and windows has
been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If
this is the first time you've seen this stop error
screen, restart the computer. If it appear again, follow
these steps." It continued to say check disk drive space,
check with the hardware vendor for BIOS updates, disable
BIOS memory options (cashing or shadowing). Remove
drivers, etc.

I rebooted 6 or 7 times. I get the same error message
every time I gave my Administrator password and the system
proceeded. The computer did run in Safe Mode (I started
up several programs in SafeMode). When I
tried to shut down from SafeMode, however the computer
locked up with a blank/dark screen with SafeMode in the
corners and the mouse cursor on the screen. Several of
the error messages at the bottom of the screen (at
different crash times)were:
0X0000008E (0XC0000005,0X805298C9,0XEEA07784,0X00000000)
0X0000008E (0XC0000005,0X805298C9,0XEE544784,0X00000000)
0X0000008E (0XC0000005,0X805298C9,0XF7C7D4DC,0X00000000)
0X0000008E (0XC0000005,0X805298C9,0XF7C794DC,0X00000000)
The computer is completely down; what do the error message
tell you? What will solve this problem??? Thanks. Ken
