I use Windows 2000.

I've noticed that certain programs, when installed,
automatically "implanted" themselves into the start-up
routine without permission. As I have no desire to have
these programs start or place an icon in my service
tray ...

what is the procedure for removing them from the start-up
routine and the icons from the service tray without
deleting the program from the computer?

Hi Rick,

try downloading this:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
it will give you an extra icon in Control Panel to deselect programs that
try to load at startup. There are pictures and instructions on the site.
Also, some programs will have an option to turn off the auto-startup, for
example Winzip, RealOne etc. Any problems, let me know,

Hope that helps,

Rob

Hi,

For junk, try the free AdAware program from www.lavasoftusa.com which is
good at removing spyware. For general programs, you can also run regedit and
browse to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run and that lists all the
programs that start from the registry. Delete the values that relate to the
programs you don't want. Check your Start/Programs/Startup folder, and also
win.ini for the run= line. Do a google search for these first if you want
more information on how to edit these system areas because you can break
your computer if you do it wrong (!)

Many such programs will have the option to remove them from starting
when windows starts in their configuration or options menu. For those
that don't, run MSCONFIG. It's not in Windows 2000 but the Windows XP
version works fine, you can get it here:
